September 22, 2026 – Crime victims will have easier access to the services they need and to compensation, and the support provided will be tailored to each individual's situation. The Government has approved the draft of the new Law on the rehabilitation of crime victims, which strengthens their protection and aligns national legislation with European standards.
"Through the new elements introduced by this project, we substantially improve the standard of protection, assistance, and rehabilitation for crime victims, prevent victimization, and guarantee effective access to justice and reparation for damages," stated Minister Vladislav Cojuhari.
The new law expands the number of people eligible for protection; it will also be granted to family members of individuals who lost their lives as a result of crimes.
At the same time, the assistance provided will be tailored to the needs of each victim. An individual assessment will make it possible to identify the person's situation and vulnerabilities, ensuring they are referred to the specialized services they require.
Victims will be able to access counseling and information, psychological and medical assistance, shelter, state-guaranteed legal aid, and financial compensation. In urgent situations, certain services may be provided even if the individual does not yet have all the necessary documents, with the requirement that these be submitted at a later stage.
Obtaining compensation will also be simpler. Victims will face fewer formalities and will be exempt from certain fees and enforcement costs.
The new law also establishes procedures for cases where the victim resides in one state and the crime was committed in another. The draft legislation designates the responsible authorities and the manner in which applications for compensation are to be transmitted between states.
