On September 14, 2020, the Minister of Justice, Fadei Nagacevschi, and the interim director of the National Administration of Penitentiaries, Vladimir Cojocaru, paid a working visit to Arrest Processing Facility in Balti.
The facility is designed in accordance with recommendations of the Council of Europe, with a capacity of 650 accommodation places for arrested persons. It is planned to be completely built and put into operation by the 2024 year. There will be detained persons in pre-trial detention and the persons sentenced to the initial regime.
Currently, the Arrest Processing Facility is under construction, consisting of four detention departments with related spaces, as well as the connecting tower. In addition to the security perimeter, an alimentary department will be built for stocking the food.
The building works are executed in proportion of 67% of the first stage. Also, interior planning works, plastering, electrical assembly and ventilation works are being carried out, meanwhile a particular attention is paid to ensure a suitable surface of the cells, common spaces and functionality schemes.
When the facility will be put into operation, it will reduces congestion among penitentiary institutions throughout the country and, at the same time, will bring the overall efficiency of the penitentiary sector.
The Ministry of Justice will continue to support the National Administration of Penitentiaries in its reform, in order to create accommodation conditions for persons in detention in accordance with international norms, meanwhile increasing the level of security in penitentiary institutions.
