
Today, the Minister of Justice, Mr. Sergiu Litvinenco, met the Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs of the United States of America, Mr. Todd D. Robinson, who is visiting the Republic of Moldova. The US Ambassador to Chisinau, E.S. Kent D. Logsdon and representatives of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Department of Criminal topics of discussions were the systemic reform of the judiciary, the fight against major corruption, the reorganization of anti-corruption institutions and the support that the USA can provide for the successful implementation of the initiated reforms.
In this context, the Minister of Justice mentioned that, as of today, the Law that provides for the verification of the integrity of candidates for membership of the Superior Council of Magistracy and the Superior Council of Prosecutors is in force, reiterating the importance of the development partner’s support in implementing the pre-vetting mechanism. "We are grateful for the assistance provided so far to our country by the United States for the development of a true rule of law state. We will appreciate if you continue supporting the reforms initiated in the field of justice, which aim to clean up the system of corrupt judges and prosecutors and with integrity issues, but also to punish those who have illegally enriched themselves and gained unjustified wealth at the expense of our citizens", underlined the Minister of Justice.
Mr. Todd D. Robinson stressed that the purpose of his visit to the Republic of Moldova is to reconfirm US support for reforms in our country, including in the areas of justice and the fight against corruption. "We greatly appreciate the reforms initiated, especially in the field of anti-corruption, and the speed of your reaction to the arising challenges. I also noticed your close dialogue with the Venice Commission, which shows your serious approach to these reforms. We are open to providing you with both expertise and technical assistance to successfully implement the pre-vetting and vetting mechanisms” said Assistant Secretary Todd D. Robinson.
At the end, the American official expressed his admiration for the way Republic of Moldova manages the crisis of the refugees from Ukraine and ensures respect for their rights, in particular for mothers and children.
